His art ranges from tormented dancing children with representations of storybook life in the background, to a seemingly biblical worship of a protective god. Exhibition of how he creatively finds balance navigating the world through art.
His work is off-putting to those who shun religion, a beacon to those that feel he speaks to their spiritual sense of the world. Motivated by a personal experience of faith as touchstone, and a cultish practice of religion as a demon, he ascends to make sense of the world through his work which only adds to the question of where he is landing. Rogers is, in many ways, the most traditional of artists. “i am supposed to be an artist,” he once said. “i draw and paint and dress the part without trying very hard, comes naturally. My lifetime obsession is pursuing “nothing definite”. At last, finally, i have come up with a way of defining it.” born in toronto, ontario, his lengthy artistic career began by working as an apprentice printer in 1954.

In 1956-59 he attended the ontario college of art & design. Rogers has taught courses on drawing at newton abbot college of art, devonshire england and school of design, sheridan university, ontario, canada. He has been celebrated and recognized as an internationally awarded animator. If you were a child in the late 1970s, the animated special “witch’s night out’, that starred the voices of the late gilda radner and catherine o’hara might look familiar. Rogers created this nationally acclaimed film starring ‘winifred the witch.'
Jonathan’s life has followed a rocky path, instructor to illustrator then animator to vagrant. A spiritual lecturer dismayed by the reality behind the curtain of the american mega-church, his artwork looks back at a life filled with success, failure, and reinvention. These are all grand statements, but at the core of his work is the way we all assess and re-assess our experiences. Buffalo 10:00 AM on november 2, 1914, charles e. Burchfield wrote about dreaming of a group of american elm trees that grew in salem, ohio, near his childhood home.
“the three trees”, as they were locally known, would appear first in a sketch from july 2, 1915. These same trees resurface later in the masterwork of the three trees, 1932-1946.
By the time the painting was finished, two of the trees were destroyed by a tornado and the third was cut down for the construction of new houses. Burchfield’s love of trees is the focus of the exhibition. Burchfield’s arboretum. In july of 1947, burchfield went on a trip with his wife, bertha, that ended in cook forest, in pennsylvania. After visiting an old growth section, he wrote: it is impossible for me to write here anything adequate about the beauty of cook’s forest.
It was beyond anything i had ever imagined—i can think of nothing better than longfellow’s impressive lines in the prologue to his evangeline “this is the forest primeval”. The glory of these ancient gigantic hemlocks is beyond me to describe. Two years later in may of 1949 burchfield wrote about another dream, this time lamenting the destruction of various kinds of trees. Dream fragment—in salem—high street—great open fields with gigantic trees, elms, buttonwoods and maples, with blue-jays flying about—it seemed as if someone on the excuse that the trees were a menace to surrounding houses had cut off the upper branches much to my disgust.
The “scars” where even the highest branch were cut off, were as big as ordinary stumps. A work from late in burchfield’s life, summer solstice (in memory of the american chestnut tree), 1961-1966, is a eulogy for a lost giant. The american chestnut was devastated by a fungus, which was accidently introduced into north america in the first decade of the twentieth century. Buffalo 10:00 AM the journey of influential educator, internationally recognized master printer, and painter harvey breverman has coalesced into an unraveling series of episodes or sequence of meaningful units. The burchfield penney presents breverman's 90th solo exhibition of more than 50 paintings and drawings, many of which have never been shown publicly before in western new york.
The contradictions of being: composite works by harvey breverman provides museumgoers with an investigation of alluring montage, uniting disparate elements in a composition. Born in pittsburgh in 1934, breverman went to carnegie-mellon university where he received his b.f.a. From 1956 to 1958 he served with army special services in korea, and in 1960 earned an m.f.a. From the ohio university. The following year he moved to buffalo hired to teach drawing at the university at buffalo, promoted to full professor in 1969 and in 1999 to distinguished professor of art by the state university of new york board of trustees. He led the ub printmaking department until his retirement in 2005.
“the discontinuous sequence series, the focus of this exhibition created between 1970-1974, evolved in many ways as an immediate reaction to the vietnam war political unrest on college campuses in the late 1960s and early 1970s,” said tullis johnson, exhibition curator and manager of archives. “around the same time, breverman sat on the committee that approved the inclusion of the department of media studies, founded by gerald o’grady, as a part of the ub school of arts & letters in 1973. The late tony conrad, a faculty member in that program, introduced him to the writings of soviet film directors dziga vertov and sergei eisenstein. Eisenstein’s essay on the importance of montage, a dialectic approach to film form, was an important influence on work from this period.”. Buffalo 10:00 AM feature more than 14 artists from the permanent collection. How is it that artists represent the passage and stillness of the days of our lives? What is time, and what does it mean to us?
Apart from seconds, minutes, hours, months, and years, how do we experience the passing of time? “mechanical measurement lacks the necessary emotional component that is true to the way that we experience life; the clock and calendar are only tools,” said scott propeack, burchfield penney interim director and chief curator. “our experience is a consideration of birthdays, work weeks, lives and deaths, waiting, and going. We make mental notes about when things have happened and when they will happen.” the work of artists marion faller and hollis frampton will provide movement spanning time, with work inspired by eadweard muybridge’s motion studies. Frank duffy, grace mckendry, and others continue this theme in the exhibition.
The seasons will be captured in the work of marsden hartley, harriet greif, and others. Bruce adams’ the treason of archaeology: this is not a pipe #2, and others offer self-reflecting on history in both practice and art. While amanda besl and reginald marsh will provide the meaningful context of waiting, the experience that fills many of our hours.
Hints at the future come through works like, event horizon, by ted miller. “how we mark time, with still objects, is like a picture in a date book,” added propreack. “sometimes the image provides us with a sense of eternal racing, and at others times a sense of endless waiting or rest. However, we spend our hours, noting these moments can be arrived at best through the vision of our artists and the work in this exhibition that provides us with signatures and markers for time.” admission adults: $10 seniors (62 & over): $8 students (with id): $5 children (age 10 & under): free when accompanied by a paid adult/senior admission suny buffalo state students, faculty & staff: free united states and canada active military and their families: free. Buffalo 10:00 AM new exhibition captures the range of charles e. Burchfield’s artistic progression from wallpaper designs and prints to masterful paintings produced between 1921, when he moved to buffalo, until a turning point in 1943, when at age 50 he experimented with yet another great stylistic change.
Genius loci: burchfield’s spirits of place 1921-1943 will open friday, december 14, 2018, as part of m&t second friday showcasing works from the center, national museums, private collections, and illustrate this critical period in burchfield’s life when he advanced to one of the most famous artists in the country. Curated by burchfield scholar nancy weekly, lenders of artworks in the exhibition include the columbus museum of art, columbus, ohio; dc moore gallery, new york, new york; fitchburg art museum, fitchburg, massachusetts; memorial art gallery, university of rochester, rochester, new york; the spiro family collection, courtesy, debra force fine art, new york; and an anonymous private collection. Genius loci: burchfield’s spirit of place 1921-1943 will be on view through sunday, march 31, 2019. Growing up in ohio, charles ephraim burchfield (1893-1967) had the myriad details of its landscape indelibly imprinted in his mind. “not satisfied with simply documenting his favorite countryside vistas, small-town eccentricities, and disturbing industrial blight, he revealed the true spirit of the places he painted.
His perspective was not passive,” said weekly. “instead, he endeavored to paint lively images that could stimulate several senses, condensing a span of time into each work—from the quick flash of lightning to a meander through the woods. The character of each place was distinctive, capturing the magic of its essence.” november 1921 marks the month burchfield moved to buffalo, new york. Although he left his ohio roots geographically, its memories still resonated in his imagination.
His new job as assistant designer at the prestigious m. Birge & sons company enabled him to use details from some of his be. Lewiston 11:00 AM the exhibition celebrates justin higner’s twenty-five-year shipbuilding career, highlighting the evolution of his model-building techniques and inventive, pseudo-historical nautical allegories. Justin higner builds worlds. For as long as he can remember, justin has created all sorts of lived environments for real and imagined figures, from full cities made of brick and found stones to cardboard box villages with streets and a port. In 1994, justin’s passion would take a new direction after watching documentary after documentary about the titanic and the edmund fitzgerald: building worlds by building ships.
The exhibition will feature models of cargo ships, cruise ships, salvages, shipwrecks, tankers, and tenders (or dinghies), as well as ships repurposed as convention centers, hotels, and museums. Drawn from a collection centered on the artist’s fictional maritime settings, these works are accompanied by narratives that chronicle not only the vessels’ imagined histories, but also the interactions and relationships between the various builders and owners that populate the artist’s mythological world.
Higner utilizes many of the ships’ interiors to display miniature reproductions of works by regionally and nationally known artists, as well as his own artwork. These micro-exhibitions, featuring artwork accompanied by real-world historical documentation, reflect his admiration for the central mission of any given art, history, or cultural museum—to serve the public. The higner maritime collection is co-curated by michael j. Beam, curator of exhibitions and special projects, and edward millar, curator of folk arts.
Support for this exhibition is provided by the new york state council on the arts with the support of governor andrew m. Cuomo and the new york state legislature. Come see what all the fun is about! Buffalo 8:00 PM gabby’s world is the music and lyrical world-building project of gabrielle smith. Smith began making music in 2007, constructing songs and ambient soundscapes out of experimental aural building blocks. Over the years, smith’s songwriting has matured, focusing in on her interest in folk melodic and lyrical traditions while also developing a keen pop sensibility.
The resulting music, showcased in albums like 2015’s o.k., carefully treads the dynamic lines between expansiveness and intimacy, with a sound defined by emotional urgency and upbeat pop danceability. Lyrically, smith’s songs are baroque, drawing from themes more in line with the romantic poets than with contemporary pop songwriters. Smith’s newest musical pseudonym gabby’s world emerges after an extended hiatus and hibernation period in which smith reevaluated many of her values and ideas about art.
Beast on beast, the first album under the name gabby’s world, deepens and complicates the stakes of smith’s work even further, and will be released in late 2018. Beast on beast was recorded live in summer 2017 at gravesend studios in brooklyn, the studio space in the since closed silent barn diy venue. Engineered and mixed by carlos hernandez and julian fader of the brooklyn art-rock band ava luna, the album captures the energetic live sound smith has honed over the years with her band, a group of three accomplished songwriters of their own right: oliver kalb of bellows, felix walworth of told slant, and jack greenleaf of sharpless.

The whole thing of the- the vast space- i’ve always loved it.” -calder, responding to the question of what started him drawing the circus “the fame of calder’s circus spread quickly between the years 1927 and 1930. All the paris art world came to know it. It brought him his first great personal success.
But what was more important, the circus also provided the first steps in calder’s development as an original sculptor” (james sweeney, as quoted in the introduction).??as clive gray explains in his accompanying text: ”a visit to the studio of alexander calder led to the chance discovery of some hundred masterful circus drawings completed over thirty years ago. I fell in love with the process of reconstructing, embellishing, and giving the doll a new lease on life. I took advantage of this passion and incorporated dolls in my sculptures and in later years into my printmaking and paintings.' Lillian has studied printmaking and drawing in poland, france and at several new york state colleges and universities.
